Rob, I’m noticing a common pattern where any time I comment about a pulley upgrade, you like to comment right away that you like the conservative tune/being conservative with the s/c. I get it and it’s your opinion, “YMMV.” If I want to upgrade the pulley and make it “less reliable” that’s up to me but my question was directed at OTT. I’d still put it more reliable than any Ford, Chevy.

I'd love to see someone upgrade the pulley. as they stated a fuel pump upgrade would definitely be needed. But with them being able to get 350whp from just a tune to the maggy charger, I wonder how much more the 4.0 and auto trans can take.

I’ll let @JustDSM confirm the pulley talk, but the standard Magnuson kit pulley already has the T4R fueling system at the limit. In order to go to a smaller pulley, you will also need to plan to upgrade the fuel pump and possibly injectors. Justin can provide guidance there. Another important thing to note, OTT is not in the business of selling tunes that put the customers vehicle at risk. If they can’t provide a safe, reliable calibration for the smaller pulley, they won’t offer it. Rest assured if you chose OTT, you’ll get a safe tune with as little risk as possible for your application. Don’t confuse that with 0 risk, obviously you’ve moved past that when you decided to add the blower :p

On another note, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the OTT team on some new shift logic options for their T4R tunes. One thing that separates OTT from other tuners is the number of tune variants they offer for each platform. Not only do they offer 5 different throttle options with a few extras if needed, they also offer up to 3 different shift logic options for many platforms such as the 3rd Gen Tacoma and 2nd Gen Tundra.

OTT typically offers a “Standard”, “Standard+”, and “Sport” shift logic for most platforms. For vehicles with secondary maps from factory like the Tacoma and Tundra via the ECT or Tow/Haul buttons, the OTT tunes get 2 very different tune options at the press of a ECT or Tow/haul button. A daily mode and a tow/haul/sport mode. The ECT/Tow/Haul options typically have an increased throttle setting as well as a more aggressive shift schedule in the tow/haul or ECT mode. You get 2 tunes on those vehicles.

Unfortunately, the T4R doesn’t have an ECT or Tow/Haul button, so there is no easy way to get us 2 tunes at the push of a button. I ran the OTT “standard” T4R tune with Mild throttle option and it was awesome for my stock 4Runner. I’ve since lifted it and added 56 lb 285/70/R17 tires. The Standard tune was still great but I wanted a little more after adding the tires. I went up to Medium throttle with the Standard shift logic and that helped a ton. However, after more drive time I wanted my T4R to hold gears a little longer before upshifting, and I wanted a little quicker downshift on occasion.

After some discussions with @JustDSM he had some test files for me to represent the “Standard+” variant for the 4Runner. After some testing I am blown away with the new Standard+ variant on my lifted, stock gear, 285 tire 4Runner. It holds gears a little longer and is a little faster for downshift with the bigger tires. With the Standard and Standard+ option for shift logic OTT has something for everyone for the T4R. I also think people with heavier trucks and regears will really enjoy Standard+.

If you’re already tuned or shopping for a tune, make sure to try both options and see what fits your needs.

I've looked into it and talked with URD about the possibility of offering a pulley for this application. Unfortunately, there's not much room on the snout of the compressor to allow fitting a smaller pulley, and the lower pulley is already about as large as you can get away with. Sadly, it doesn't look like there will be a means to get the rotor speed up on these blowers anytime soon, if at all.

We'll certainly keep our eyes out for alternative solutions, but nothing at this time. Sorry.

We've done a full forged & stroked (4.5L Single VVTi 1GR), w/ custom Kelford Cams supercharger specific camshafts, a Maggy w/ 2.5" pulley, and all the other supporting bolt-ons without issue on the A750. They'll take a decent amount of torque without problems as long as you're not abusing them outright. While we do increase line pressure in our calibration for applications like this, I'd still suggest a valve body upgrade for the more involved builds as the one I mentioned.

So your belief is that there was not a supercharger tune on the rig above whether Magnuson or custom? You are believing it still had stock tune? Is Magnuson selling any of these as tuner kits? Or they all are complete with tuner?

That's correct. I no not believe the installer properly applied the calibration. The vehicle was licensed, so an attempt to load the calibration was made. However, given the output, and the log data that was sampled on the two pulls I made leads me to strongly believe this was on the OEM N/A Calibration.

Here is the OTT Calibration in blue as previously shown, with the "As Found" run in red. Overlayed in green is the stock pull from @BortisYeltzen's 4Runner we used in development (see original dyno sheets for that data).

    4RunnerSC VS NA.png

As noted, the Magnuson Supercharged 4Runner did not make any more power than a stock 4Runner at WOT when it arrived. The logs confirmed the ECU was NOT HAPPY. It was knocking badly, running very low ignition timing as a result, having a bunch of knock enrichment added, and, in general, not running as it should. We immediately informed the client of what we observed, and our suspicion, along with some backstory that the client shared with us, further suggested the possibility that the tune was not loaded.

I'm not aware that Magnuson supplies tuner kits for this platform. I would find it unlikely that this was a result of that, due to the fact the vehicle was properly licensed with VFTuner, and was untouched before the installation of the supercharger. Had very low miles to boot.

No worries brother. I still plan on getting the OTT Magnuson Tune this weekend. I ran OTT before I was boosted and it was awesome. Great power delivery and transmission was on point. I can only imagine how the new tune will feel with the supercharger and also a regear. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question

@JustDSM I just need to say man, the new OTT tune for the Magnuson S/C is phenomenal. The OTT is substantially better than the S/C + Pedal monster, not even comparable. The shifting is on point, absolutely zero throttle lag in any gear and it pulls non-stop. It performs even better than you'd expect a supercharged rig to run. I got the tune from Quoc in Orange County who also tuned me when I was NA, and he said "Magnuson leaves half of it on the table" which I can see/feel now. He's a class act btw, super cool dude. Gave me some OTT swagger and patches! Great job on creating that tune brother.

On the fuel pump upgrade, is there a pump you guys have seen good success with or would recommend?

Any of the pumps available in this upgrade kit would work just fine. If it was me personally, I'd go with the AEM pump but that's not to say any of the others are bad.

Hi all, late to the convo (new member). Has there been any progress on availability of full ECU (engine) and TCU (transmission) access for 2015 T4Rs? I have an OTT tuner in my area & they're not recommending an OTT tune at this time for this reason.

Also, I'm running a Pedal Monster throttle controller; is there any benefit to keeping it if/when I'm able to get a tune?

We have support for '10-'12 MY 4Runners with the full OTT treatment; 2015 is one we're currently working on. I can't say much more but as soon as it's available for other years we'll announce it here.

Once you get a tune (from OTT), you would not need it, nor would the throttle controller be recommended, as it will interfere with the mapping we configure in the ECU. You may trigger a code as the throttle controller is expecting the ECU to have OE throttle mapping, which is not present in our calibration.

With the OTT, we can change between 87 and 91 at any time without having to reset the ECU, correct?

let's say I am content with 87 on a day to day basis while commuting but would like to put 91 on some weekends when driving up the mountains on steep grades (going from 1000 ft to 9000 ft), would that work?

And if I don't reset the ECU manually, would I need to go through a few refilling cycles with 91 for the 4R to adapt or will it adapt more or less right away (assuming that there is no more to very little amount of 87 left in the tank before refilling to 91) ?

    Good question!

You can blend, mix, switch, or otherwise use any pump fuel, and the ECU will actively adjust. It won't immediately sense, as it is a feedback-based system, but as it continually monitors the engine's vitals, it will collectively trim in or out ignition advance to maintain its operating state to be as advanced as it can get away with on the fuel being run.

Some thresholds must be met to allow the learning to occur. Typically, this is simplified as having the engine at operating temperature, but can be further explained with the following:

The knock control system of the 5th Gen 4Runner is only active between 600-5900RPM when engine coolant temps are above 140deg F.

The adaptive learning (or octane learning) portion of the ECU is active from 1000-5600RPM when coolant temps are above 182deg F. The adaptive strategy also has some load and time thresholds, which require the engine to be held in a relatively steady state condition for 3.01sec before "learning" will occur. We can also control the rate it which it learns up/down as required.

Additionally, it learns in three distinct RPM regions independently of the others so the engine can dial in low RPM driving relatively quickly as you spend a great deal of time there. Then, the middle zone is when you're passing or otherwise a bit further into the throttle and in the middle of the tach. Then there's the high RPM region, which is pretty much only accessed when your foot is buried into the floorboard :)

    Thanks!

So going through 1 full tank with 91 through both city and freeway driving should be sufficient for the tune to work properly on the following 91 tank if I understand correctly?

Copper State Tuning in Tempe, AZ is listed as one of the retailers on your website. Safe to go there for a proper ECU flash with the OTT I assume?

One last question, the tune gives the throttle a more "punchy" feel? If I wanted to keep the stock throttle, I just need to request it to the tuner, correct?

A tank will do the trick. As you get to nearly 3/4 to 1/2 a tank it should be well blended and adpated.

Wayne with CST will take good care of you. You're in good hands with anyone on our map will have access to the same files we would supply directly. No need to stress there.

We have a range of 5 different throttle settings. I would encourage you to sample the Lite setting before settling on stock, but if that's what you're ultimately after we can absolutely supply the file with stock throttle settings. No trouble at all.

    Best,

Stock throttle setting is hot garbage. Definitely have it adjusted. I'm running it on Medium currently and it is a bit too touchy for me so next time I get a chance will have it tuned down to Mild.

I’m running Med with the STD+ shift logic on mine. Currently have 285/70/R17 Toyo AT3 E-load tires, full AL skids, but no other added weight. I like the Med and the STD+ shift logic is great. It holds gears longer before upshift and downshifts a little quicker in some gears compared to the STD shift logic. STD+ is great for bigger tires and stock gears in my opinion. It’s cool how many options OTT offers for the tunes.

I'm intrigued by the new STD+ shift logic option and wonder if it would alleviate a weird scenario I have encountered. I have a couple of mild inclines around me that if I'm going about 58MPH while using standard cruise control, the RPM will bounce back and forth once or twice from 1k to 2k without shifting gears like it doesn't know what do on that particular hill lol. Not a big deal, just something I noticed.

Yeah, I’ve seen that on the STD files on my T4R also, it was around 60 mph, it doesn’t seem to do it at any other speed with CC set for me, that 60 mph range only. If I set it to 58 or 62, all good. Out here we don’t have anywhere where I’d use CC at 60, everything is 70+ out here. I haven’t tried to recreate the behavior on STD+. It’s actually hard to test that, I’ll have people riding my ass even in the far right lane.

@JustDSM So, I'm just getting done on my test drive with the tune. My tuner said he wasn't aware of the Standard+ file and sent me on my way with just the mild/standard tune to test out. Is the Standard+ option not available to everyone yet, or are we missing something here? After my initial test, and reading what @BortisYeltzen has experienced with the Standard+ I think I'd like to test that one out also.

Reach out to your tuner or if you self tuned contact OTT. Some very nice and exclusive to OTT updates have been released recently that you’d likely benefit from.

I got tuned this morning, and he said what he had was the latest. Only options were "Lite. Mild. Medium. Spicy. SS" I asked him about the Standard+ days beforehand and he had no clue but that he'd check for new files. I get there, and nothing. Just wanting to make sure it wasn't a beta file still being tested.

If you got the tune recently you are on the latest files that have the updates I was talking about in my earlier post. If you want something different, reach out to your tuner or OTT directly and tell them what you want. If it’s doable, OTT will do it.
