It is a fleet average. I'm just pointing out the illogic of the CAFE and associated regulations. Why allow one unit to be a polluter/guzzler just to be offset by another unit like the Prius? Pollution is pollution and gas guzzling is gas guzzling. That would be akin to the EU saying it is OK for Romania to pump out as much carbon as it wants because Switzerland is so environmentally friendly.

I can't argue with that. But, I feel like it's the only reason we're still allowed to own anything fun.

Really wanting a 6th gen LE but not a fan of the back seats not folding flat and looks like the LE has some kinda ‘adaptive variable suspension’ which sounds like it will be difficult to replace with aftermarket suspension..And as it’s higher trim I might have no choice but to get a Hybrid.

seriously considering trading in for a 2024 LE now.

You don't like your 2023 ORP with KDSS? Why not hold onto that...

I do but the full time 4WD will be better for me in the winters. Kinda wish they offered full time 4WD on other trims. I’d be happy with a SR5

This is why the 6th gen is a castrated EPA mandated electrified golf cart now with room for your golf bag maybe. The real last iconic 4runner Is the 5th gen and the 6th gen is just a 4-gotten.

Not quite illogical, the objective is to reduce fuel use/emissions/whatever so while the fleet average needs to improve and hit certain metrics over time, the manufacturer is given leeway in where those improvements are made.

The across the board numbers have to inch up, but with a comprehensive fleet of hybrids, efficient smaller CUVs, etc. Toyota can afford some dessert like the GX.

Of course the footprint loophole is probably it's biggest failing in my book but I'm not sure how I'd close that off the top of my head anyway.

Something similar happened to me few weeks back at Walker Valley ORV. I was crawling up a technical trail and it got pretty bad, I had one front wheel in the air and a rear wheel was almost in the air. It was getting even more technical ahead. I realized it was not worth it and I had to back. But backing up slow was risky. So I straightend my wheels, left the foot off the brake and speed got me out of trouble lol. If I did a slow dance like this guy I would have rolled over. Speed
Look at the new GX too

I'm trading my 5th gen for the new GX, and no way I'm going to trash that on the trail. So this is what I'm getting. All I will be asking from the GX is to pull this thing to places :)

This memory foam mattress is 75" x 25". There are a couple more empty inches to the front passenger seat (with the rear seat bottoms removed). It makes a comfortable sleeping area:

the new GX is sweeeet, no doubt. If I could afford both I’d keep the 5th to play and get the GX for a daily- better in snow and ability to pull a decent camper.

That’s one of the saddest points on the 6th gen. Just knowing you can sleep in the back of the 5th gen opens up a lot of possibilities when traveling. I’m not going to be in the market for a long time, but it might be an issue if I need to get a new one in 15 years time. I’m going to assume that toyota is going to milk this generation out as long as it can, given the global platform it’s on.

I would think the global platform will allow for less time between generations...so in 15 years, they might be on the 8th gen. If a bunch of the overall 4Runner-buying public complain about the cargo floor, Toyota would redesign it. The problem is, folks on a Toyota forum like this, while passionate, represent a tiny fraction of the 4Runner customer base and most customers will not use the cargo area for anything other than a place for purchases, sports equipment, luggage, etc. The enthusiasts dissent would not be enough to move the needle in Toyota's eyes.

Let’s be realistic, in 2039 if the 4Runner is still for sale new it’s going to be on an all electric platform. It may have a motor at each wheel ala Rivian and the entire floor a big battery ala Tesla.

Maybe in Europe. Here is massive blow-back on EVs is just starting, EV sales are plummeting and resale prices cratering. While major technological breakthrough could change things overnight, as-is EV market is already saturated and these EV mandates are about to become political liability.

There is a lot of talk this year about EV hype being over, and there is definitely a slowdown. I don't know how much of that is truly changing consumer sentiment and how much of it is record growth the last few years catching up and hitting the wall of slow charging infrastructure growth. Yes there is going to be a lot more hybrid in the mix for a lot longer and we may see other things like fuel cell and hydrogen combustion (which frankly I think is a dead end) , or biofuel derived synthetic gasoline (which I think would be great for the environment AND for enthusiasts to keep classic cars on road) in the mix.

Some European countries set aggressive targets like only EV sales after 2030 or 2035 and that's probably going to push out but I wouldn't make any bets on 2040. Remember that when Benz built his patent motorwagen the only place to get gas was to go to a chemist and have it custom mixed up. 20 years later there was a gas station on every street corner. The world can move fast when it wants to.

(AND I am going to again provide the disclaimer that I dont even own an EV or a hybrid. Still all gas here but I can see whats coming)

"Record numbers" can potentially be nothing but spin. Units sold are counted by how many are produced by manufacturers, not how many are bought by the end user. Further, a nice chunk of the units bought were bought were by corporate interests, not by private consumers. I tried to rent a car in December and one car rental company had nothing but a fleet of Teslas. I passed.

comes with 265/75R16 offroads so i imagine you could beef it up quite a bit. but then again, you would to buy a whole new set of tires since it uses 2 + carries 2
